About Kumihimo

Kumihimo is a Japanese braiding technique which translates as the "Coming together of Threads".

Historically, it was used to secure armor of the Samurai and that of their horses. Later, it was used to tie prayer scrolls and to fasten the traditional kimono.

Modern Kumihimo uses fibers and/or beads to create beautiful jewelry.

It is a craft that is fun to create and can be addictive!

About Me

My name is Marilyn Charles and I live on the West Coast of Canada in beautiful Sechelt, British Columbia with my husband Peter. (A lifelong artist.)

I have always been interested in Jewelry, fascinated by its long history and curious to know how it was, and still is, created by our world's many cultures.

Recently I discovered Kumihimo, a Japanese braiding technique that utilizes various kinds of cords, fibers, and/or beads to make necklaces and bracelets. Kumihimo Braiding, using seed beads from Japan, can result in some amazing jewelry pieces. The process requires extensive planning before the actual braiding begins. It is a challenge to envision how certain choices of colors and patterns will translate into the finished piece. One never knows for sure what the result will be… there is an element of fun and mystery when I am creating Kumihimo jewelry.
